AM Concurrent Session Descriptions
During this session, the OIED team will provide updates to the participants on the changing landscape and overlap in areas impacting human resources. This presentation will include in-depth conversations and updates on Title IX due to new regulations being released in May 2023, parenting and pregnancy resources, search committee and affirmative action. Through this session, the participants will take away resources for navigating some of these complex HR related issues.
Presenter: David Elrod (he/him)
David Elrod is the Associate Vice Provost in the Office for Institutional Equity and Diversity and has completed a Bachelor’s in Mathematics, Masters in Higher Education Administration, and Doctorate in Educational Leadership. David has served in multiple areas within higher education including, adjunct teaching positions, university housing, financial aid, student conduct, and equal opportunity. Prior to his role as Associate Vice Provost, David served as a Director of Student Conduct and an Equal Opportunity Officer.
In this session, participants will gain a better understanding of what burnout is, what contributes to it and how to address it individually and as a team. Participants will have the opportunity to reflect on what work life balance and self care look like for them as individuals while debunking myths about burnout and help-seeking in the workplace.
Presenter: Pablo Campos
Pablo Campos is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and Generalist Counselor at the NCSU Counseling Center. He specializes in trauma, addictive behaviors, and working with first generation students. Pablo is an NC State Alum and Northern VA Native who lives in Raleigh with his family of four. He enjoys the outdoors, cooking, and spending time with his family.
Learn about the “Team Tune-Up,” a working retreat that utilizes a fast-paced group facilitation process where teams discuss important topics such as purpose, impact, strengths, innovation and challenges in order to reconnect and realign to organizational success. This is an interactive train-the-trainer session where participants will have the opportunity to move through the “Team Tune-Up” process firsthand.
Presenter: Kevin Rice, Ph.D.
Kevin Rice has had the opportunity to lead the NC State University’s Learning & Organizational Development team since June of 2003. This includes the implementation of leadership and professional development programs for faculty and staff. Learning & Organizational Development provides training and resources that support the development of management and staff to help them reach their capabilities. L&OD also provides advice and guidance in areas such as collaboration, communication, engagement, accountability, management, supervision, and strategic planning.
Continuous process improvement is vital to our success. Through this interactive session you will learn how Lean Six Sigma principles can enable you to improve processes and solve challenges by applying the LSS five step model through a fun, experiential project. NC State Black Belts will share their experiences and showcase examples of LSS projects that have led to transformational impacts in human resources.
Presenters:
Ellen Coster, HR Consultant for University HR Continuous Improvement, has more than fifteen years experience in human resources and process improvement with experience in the private sector and Johns Hopkins University prior to joining NC State eight years ago. Ellen has a B.S. in Mass Communications. In addition to PHR and SHRM-CP, Ellen has a Lean Six Sigma Black Belt certification.
Margaret Erickson has 23 years of experience in higher education HR leadership working in complex organizational structures, both in the private and public sector, with a specialization in strategic leadership and Lean process improvement. Margaret holds an MA in Organizational Management, and is a certified Organizational Development Consultant, and has completed a post-graduate certificate in Executive Leadership at Cornell University.
Nikki Price serves as the Assistant Dean for Culture, Talent and Human Resources in the College of Sciences at NC State. She is a human resources executive in higher education with over 20 years of strategic and operational experience. Nikki holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice from North Carolina Central University and a Master of Science degree in Human Resources from Western Carolina University. She also holds certifications as a Professional in Human Resources (PHR), Society for Human Resources Management Certified Professional (SHRM-CP), Lean Six Sigma Black Belt (LSSBB), Gallup Certified Clifton Strengths Coach, and an Intercultural Development Inventory (IDI) Qualified Administrator.

Lauri Andrews, SAS Senior Career Advisor, will share how these global opportunities support employees as they align who they are with what they do as they continue to grow their career at SAS.
Lauri Andrews has developed impactful programs for organizations within Human Resources and Training and Development throughout her career. She has actively contributed to start-ups, state government, non-profits, and large corporations to increase employee satisfaction and retention rates. Lauri has lived out her purpose for the last decade by creating and building global career development programs at SAS. Lauri lives in Cary with her husband, four daughters and an adored fur baby named Ollie.
PM Concurrent Session Descriptions
Participants will discuss the qualities of good leadership and the unique strengths of as well as challenges facing women in leadership. Participants will explore which characteristics, patterns of behavior, strengths, and restorative practices are associated with great leaders and the impacts of sexism and androcentrism on how women in leadership are viewed and evaluated. Participants will be asked to reflect on issues of workplace bias, stereotyping, and intersecting identities and identify ways to build supportive workplace systems and strong teams.
Megan Glancy is a lecturer in Sociology and an advisor in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology. Her areas of study include the family, military culture, and inequalities, specifically gender, sexuality, race, and class. Megan teaches a variety of classes pertaining to social problems and gender issues in both the Department of Sociology and for the Women and Genders Studies program. She has been a member of the Wolfpack since 2006.
This conference session will provide an opportunity for attendees to review and discuss real-world case studies related to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in higher education institutions. Through a facilitated discussion, attendees will analyze and reflect on the challenges, strategies, and outcomes presented in the case studies. This interactive session is designed to promote critical thinking, collaboration, and problem-solving skills related to DEI issues in academia.The session is ideal for individuals and groups who are committed to creating more inclusive and equitable academic communities.
Presenter: Melissa Edwards Smith (she/her), Director of Education and Campus Engagement
Melissa Edwards Smith has two decades of professional experience working in the areas of international education and diversity, equity, and inclusion. She is passionate about cultural bridge-building, experiential learning, and critical reflection. Her work centers on intentional program design, program assessment, and strategic planning. Her graduate degrees include a Master of Education in Adult Education from NC State (2011) and a Master of Arts in International Studies from ECU (2001).
Presenter: Melvin (Jai) Jackson, Assistant Vice Provost for Faculty Engagement
Melvin (Jai) Jackson serves as the Assistant Vice Provost for Faculty Engagement in the Office for Institutional Equity and Diversity. Prior to his current position, he served in the College of Education as the Director of Graduate Student Success. Jai earned his doctorate in Educational Leadership and Research from Louisiana State University.
Data, spreadsheets, charts and graphs can all be intimidating! In a time where data is accessible all around us, it has never been more critical to know how to use data to make a compelling argument when making data driven business decisions. We will walk through the fundamentals of data storytelling, provide real-life examples to connect the concepts to HR experiences, and facilitate interactive discussions about emerging trends and some videos from leading industry experts. Whether you are an experienced data analyst or a novice hoping to get started in data storytelling, we hope you’ll join us for this session.

Ryan Bernarduci, Director of HR Information Management & Analytics, has approximately eighteen years in Human Resources working with employee data to help organizational leaders make data driven business decisions and to tell the organization’s story about its valuable employee populations. Ryan has a M.S. in HR Management, a MBA in Business Intelligence and a M.S. in Analytics.
Rashi Waghray, Assistant Director of HR Information Management & Analytics, has thirteen years of experience using data and information to advance project management and process improvement initiatives in both public and private organizations. Rashi earned a Bachelor of Engineering in Electrical Engineering and a certificate in Data Analytics, with the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Alexis Steptoe, Assistant Director, Wellness helps advance the well-being of students, faculty, and staff through strategic planning and creative programming to help shape the culture of wellness on NC State’s campus. She received a Bachelor of Science degree with a concentration in Health Education and Health Promotion from Radford University and obtained her Master of Public Health in Community Health Education from The University of North Carolina at Greensboro. She is a Nationally Board Certified Health and Wellness Coach (NBC-HWC) and a Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES.)
Kelly Vance, Wellness, Childcare & Perks Coordinator with UHR. Kelly is a highly skilled, personable, and enthusiastic wellness professional who works with employees to help them achieve their wellness goals. Kelly currently holds four nationally accredited certifications, two specialty fitness certifications, a health coach certification and mental health first aid certification. Kelly also holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Exercise and Sport Science from UNC Chapel Hill.
